On the way to Byron Bay

Our camping site in Byron Bay

"This is cool, having breakfast on a terrace facing the sea", says GuillaumeL. Indeed, we eat a large breakfast and then drive until 8 in the evening to Byron Bay and find a place to sleep. We go through landscapes of colors as contrasted as this country is: green sugar cane fields on red earth, black sky with strong rain above lands lit by a crushing sun, dark rivers surrounded by rich vegetation. The small towns we drive through remind us of the USA and the driving is as relaxed as it is there. As we go around Brisbane, we drive up a huge bridge stretching over a river and see the skyscrapers of a city which has grown quickly. We call all the hotels indicated in the Lonely Planet, but all is full: Byron Bay is besieged by 30 to 40 thousand people for the new year. This is confirmed when we look in town, si we go to the camping and set up our tents, relieved that the strong rain we drove through has stopped and that the sandy ground is already dry. With the help of the car lights, we quickly set camp and go eat in town. Many places have already stopped serving, so we go to an Indian restaurant where the chef accepts to open his kitchen for us. The waitress is French, so GuillaumeL switches from his telling of a hot story every time she comes by, by inventing some phony business conversation which has us all laughing merrily. After dinner, she explains we should get "all included" tickets to go to bars and for dinner. Outside, the streets are no longer as crowded, which is not the case of the very wild camping, on 75 acres.
