The road is clear, the landscape rather dry and barren, with increasingly rocky areas. We eventually reach the harbour of Assos after going past the village of Behramkale, above which the ancient site is perched, atop an impressive hill. First things first, we sit at a lovely restaurant at the waterfront and have a full meal: a mix of local specialties, typical Turkish dishes and fish from the Aegean Sea. Rusen and I head off for a walk in the harbour, and a delicious homemade ice cream and waffle. After a stroll at the foot of the cliff and a view of the amphitheatre, we walk up to the ancient site, through the more modern 14th century village and fortifications. The Athena temple still has a few elegant Doric columns standing, conveying an image of timeless beauty. We are offered a panorama of the necropolis, olive trees, harbour, and of the sea towards the Greek island of Lesvos. The contemplation of these wonders draws to an end as we need to head back, luckily along a shorter and more scenic road by the sea.
